Why You Should Train (Excluding Reasons Related to Weight Loss)

In this post I’ll discuss why you should train (excluding reasons related to weight loss). Everyone knows that following a fitness regime is important. It’s important to keep you healthy, help you to lose weight and to get fit.

But there are other reasons for training and staying fit and healthy. These reasons are often overlooked by most people. It’s not your fault though!

Society and social media is constantly bombarding us with information on staying skinny/muscular (for men), getting fit and going on diets. However, there are reasons outside of the aesthetic that you should consider and use as motivation.

In this article, I’ll discuss the following points:

  • Reasons to train
  • Why it’s important
  • Staying fit without going to the Gym
  • Best Fitness App (my personal favorite)

Train For These Reasons

Below I’ll be giving you 5 reasons to train that’s not related to getting fit or losing weight. These are just by-products of training however important they might be in the long run. Let’s get into it.

1. Train to carry your groceries

Yes, we’ve all seen those memes where someone carried 20 grocery bags in one go. It’s an exaggeration but not untrue. You can either do multiple trips to the car (and get in your daily steps) or challenge yourself to a single trip.

Sometimes we buy heavy things – especially as women – and we can’t wait around all day until someone strong comes by to help with unloading the car. Get strong and show’em you can do it yourself.

2. Train to pick up your children

This may be your children or grand children. Training should not stop at a certain age. Training and staying strong is for all ages.

Do it so that you can pick up your kids some day and play with them. You don’t want to miss out on all the fun stuff you can do with them just because you’re feeling a little weak?

An added bonus is that training gives you some stamina too! Which means you’ll be able to (almost) keep up with their high energy.

3. Train to move furniture safely

Maybe you’re settled down already and not planning to move again for the next 20 years. Or not. Whatever the case may be, you will find yourself either moving furniture around in your house or just moving house altogether.

Train in such a way that you will be able to easily move furniture. Become so strong that you don’t have to drag your couch into a new position but be able to pick it up safely and move it (with help of course!).

4. Train for good posture

This is something that gets overlooked a lot. How many of us can truly say that we have good posture?

We’re in a seated position most of the day. This can be due to our sedentary work day or chilling on the couch after work for hours. It’s unhealthy and results in bad posture.

Bad posture results in muscle tension, headaches and back problems. Thank you to all the chiropractors out there helping us out with a lot of the problems that bad posture causes.

So, train to keep good posture and prevent back problems. They can really wreak havoc on your day-to-day activities.

5. train to live longer

Okay, this one is related to health. But usually it’s all about staying healthy and having strong bones.

Staying active and fit has mental health benefits. Studies have shown that depression is associated with an elevated all-cause mortality. It’s also an established risk factor for suicide.

Training can elevate the mood and ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. If mental health is not motivation enough, then physical health might be a motivator too!

Exercise has been linked to:

  • lower blood pressure
  • reduced risk of heart disease death
  • lowers “bad” cholesterol and regulates blood sugar levels
  • Reduced risk at early death (more so when training in mid-afternoon)

Why It’s Important to Train

If the reasons above did not fully explain the importance of training then I hope this will.

Here are a few reasons why it’s important to train and follow an active lifestyle:

  • Improves brain health
  • Helps to manage (and lose) weight
  • Reduces your risk of disease, more importantly, heart disease
  • Training and physical exercise improves your ability to do everyday activities
  • It strengthens muscles and bones

No Gym Required

You can get fit and strong without going to the gym. I have a couple of great fitness apps and tricks that you can try for free.

All you need is yourself and minimal equipment that’s inexpensive (optional). If you’re just starting out then body weight will be all you need! Let’s get into it.

Fitness apps

My personal favorite is FitOn. FitOn is free to use and has hundreds of workouts to choose from.

You can customize it to suit you or you can let them set out exercises for you according to your goals. As I mentioned before, it’s totally free. By having them set out a training program for you it takes the guessing away from you. That way you can just show up and click play!

Next there’s YouTube. I know, this is not an app but hear me out. The Body Project is amazing. I make use of them on the regular when I simply just want to do something different that’s cardio related.

They have beginner, intermediate and advanced trainers on screen to help you along the way. If you’re ready to sweat with great music and fun conversation then this one is for you.

Lastly, if jumping around or lifting weights is not for you then perhaps yoga is. My two favorites are Yoga with Kassandra and Breathe and Flow .

Kassandra’s classes include something for everyone, is mostly slow and steady. If you want to take things slow and not feel like you’re way in over your head then her workouts would be a great fit.

However, if you’re looking for something a bit more challenging and strength-focused then head on over to Breathe and Flow. Their yoga style is much different from traditional yoga and they’re extremely good at explaining each move and sequence.

What’s required?
