Enock Mwepu and the Rise of Heart Disease in Football

In October 2022 Premier League midfielder, Enock Mwepu, was forced to retire from professional football at the young age 24. Brighton & Hove Albion had Mwepu assessed after returning from international duty with an illness. The medical team did an array of tests and exams on the footballer. It was concluded that he suffers from a hereditary heart disease. This made it impossible for him to continue his football career.

Enock Mwepu’s Rise to Football

Enock Mwepu was born and raised in a small town in Zambia. He showed great potential at an early age. He represented his country at u/17 and u/20 level eventually making his debut for the full national team in 2017. At age 19 Austrian football club Red Bull Salzburg signed the young African talent. They later sold him to premier league side, Brighton and Hove Albion, for a record transfer fee. Enock Mwepu managed to receive the goal of the season award for his long-range effort against Liverpool whilst in his first season with the Seagulls and plagued with injury.

Commonality of Heart Disease in Football

Several high-profile footballers have been diagnosed with heart conditions in recent history including the likes of Sergio Aguerro, Daley Blind, Iker Casillas and Fabrice Muamba. The latter famously collapsing during the quarter final of the FA Cup in March of 2012. More recently we remember seeing Christian Erickson laying lifeless on the pitch of their group match versus Finland at Euro 2022, after suffering cardiac arrest.

Although most of these cases cannot be linked directly to football many experts have called for teams’ schedules to be re-assessed. Modern day teams tend to play a lot more football than in the past. A Premier League team that competes in European competition can be required to play in excess of 55 matches during a season. This is dependent on progression during knock out phases. Players representing their countries are required to play even more. It is understandable that questions are being asked about the number of games footballers are required to play at the highest level. This is due to the constant international travel and level of fitness required from footballers.

Will Enock Mwepu Return to Football?

The news of the young midfielder’s retirement came as a shock to family and friends and many footballers came out in support of Enock. Former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck tweeted: “Devastated for Enock. A great player and a truly great guy. Family and health is way more important than football. Enock will shine off the pitch too. No doubt!

Mwepu vowed to take time away from football to reflect on the sudden retirement. He plans to return to football in some capacity in the future. Nonetheless, in his short career he accomplished a lot and serves as an inspiration to many young aspiring African footballers.
