In this article I compared the NERIS Type Explorer test to that of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. In a previous article I touched on the MBTI and some of its flaws.
I went into personality and what it is. In another article I mentioned the 8 basic aspects of personality theories and theorists and how these relate to us today.
For this article I took the NERIS Type Explorer personality test and analyzed it to the best of my abilities. I discuss the following:
- What the test is
- My findings after taking the test and
- My take aways
This article will also compare the NERIS to the MBTI and discuss its similarities as well as differences to the MBTI.
NERIS Type Explorer vs Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
The NERIS Type Explorer test is based on the theories of Carl Jung and his 5-factor model and Isabel Briggs Myers’ Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The personality test places emphasis on 5 personality facets:
- Mind
- Nature
- Tactics
- Energy
- Identity
Collectively they make up the 16 personalities of the NERIS Type Explorer. It’s very similar to the MBTI test where the result is recognized by a letter. However, the MBTI only has 4 letters to resonate with a specific personality type whereas the NERIS uses 5 letters.
Each of the personality types fall within a “category” and there are 4 categories. The categories are as follows:
- Analysts
- Diplomats
- Sentinels
- Explorers
While these categories are new and separate the test from the MBTI there are still a few similarities. This personality test uses some of the same facets or terminology that are being measured:
Introversion vs. Extraversion
Observant vs. Intuitive
Thinking vs. Feeling
Judging vs. Prospecting
Assertive vs. Turbulent
Looking into these facets, I found that their descriptions are extremely comparable to that of the MBTI – they just paraphrased those same descriptions. The only difference is the added assertive vs. turbulent.
I Took The Personality Test And This Is What I Found
Out of the 16 personalities I was given the INFJ-T personality type, the Advocate. It falls under the section for Diplomat.
I was impressed by the information it provided on the personality type. My results were as follows:
- 78% Introverted
- 65% Intuitive
- 54%Feeling
- 75% Judging
- 63% Turbulent
I read through the information it provided of myself and who I was as a person. The information mesmerized me and I just could not get enough of it. But then I read through it a second time and I thought:
How many other people are drinking from this fountain?
Yes, there is a lot that I agree with and I see myself as that, but there’s also the other side. There are things I don’t agree with and that I find a little….. contradictory.
NERIS Type Explorer and Why I Take it With a Pinch of Salt
Here are a few things that I read that I didn’t quite agree with when I received my answers to the NERIS Type Explorer personality test.
1. Connecting with Others
” Advocates enjoy meaningful conversations far more than small talk, and they tend to communicate in a way that is warm and sensitive.”
Unfortunately, knowing myself, I did not agree with this. So often I find myself wondering why I’m suddenly getting the cold shoulder from someone when what I said was positive or with good intention.
However, I’ve been told that no matter how good my intentions are, my choice of words will let me down. This is because I’m brutally honest and I don’t like to beat around the bush.
” …even constructive criticism may feel incredibly personal or hurtful to these personalities.”
Again, having a mindset of continuous improvement I have learnt to not take constructive criticism to heart.
Personally, this is how people ought to think about taking these tests: Look for these small gaps that can be seen as something that might hold you back and build on those.
Yes, I used to take criticism personal but I no longer do. My mindset has changed but the test result indicates otherwise. It does not take these things into account.
2. Question 58
You would pass along a good opportunity if you thought someone else needed it more.
This question is completely dependent on the situation. Do we think of the question as work-related or when buying a house? There are so many scenarios where I would handle the situation completely different.
Although I chose to disagree somewhat with the statement my result was even more shocking. On 2 occasions they discredited my answer. See below:
“…they typically care more about altruism than personal gain” and “Altruistic – People with this personality type aren’t happy to succeed at another person’s expense.”
I don’t necessarily believe in altruism, because I believe there is always another reason why people do things “for the greater good”. Be it for clicks, for viewers or fame.
But I also would not compromise someone else’s future for personal gain. However, I wouldn’t pass along a great opportunity for work if I thought someone else needed it more.
That’s just the thing, we don’t always know who the other candidate is and that’s why we rely so blindly on fairness. We hope that we’ve done enough to prove that we deserve the spot more.
3. Question 5
“You usually stay calm even under a lot of pressure”
This question seems easy enough to answer. Straight forward. But it also places a lot of value on your own perception of how you handle stress and pressure.
Some of us think that we handle pressure quite well and we might think that we keep a calm façade. But those around us may feel different through their observations of us in dire circumstances. The inverse might also be true.
While taking this personality test, we don’t ask our peers for input. We take the test alone and hope for an honest, reliable and accurate result.
4. 54% Feeling
I received a 54% in feeling and 46% thinking. Although being so close to the middle of the range, I was still given feeling. There’s nothing wrong with that, but does the test take the percentages into account?
Does the wording for each INFJ-T personality type change according to the percentages given in that specific category? It’s a generic answer and each individual should take what relates to them and discard the rest.
But then that would mean we already knew our personalities even before we took the test in the first place. Would it not?
My Take Aways On The NERIS Type Explorer
Although there is a lot that I found contradictory or reliant on personal perception, I also found some “positives”.
- The personality test gave me a lot of positive information which made me feel good about myself.
- It confirmed my career and study choices as being best suited to my personality type.
- I was able to better understand when, how and where my shortcomings are when it comes to being taken advantage of.
- What I also enjoyed about the test was that it had a whole section on Advocate Weaknesses. It gave a list of my weaknesses while also indicating why they are weaknesses.
- Besides only mentioning weaknesses, it does give some insight into what can be done to no longer suffer under those weaknesses. But you have to read between the lines.
Conclusion
There’s a lot of these examples that I can use to show how I don’t agree with the test but there’s also a lot of examples I can use to show how I do agree with it.
The NERIS Type Explorer has its flaws but it also holds some truths. That’s how it is with most personality tests that are reliable and valid. No test will ever be 100% accurate.
When taking a personality test, be open-minded and don’t take all it has to say at face value. Some of it will be applicable to you but be honest with yourself when you find answers that don’t really resonate with you and your values.
The test isn’t there to tell you who you must be, in fact, it’s there to give you an idea of who you might be. It should also be used as a tool to show you where your own weaknesses are as well as your strengths. You can use those as a basis to build on and hopefully achieve your goals and dreams.
