UFC 285: Fight Card and Dana White’s Bad Decisions

UFC 285 is a PPV event is taking place on March 4, 2023. I’ve been looking forward to the event since I heard Dricus du Plessis AND Cameron Saaiman would be competing.

However, after taking a look at the line-up I was confused as to why du Plessis did not make it on the main card, but prelims. He’s a ranked fighter now, with a record of 18 wins and 2 losses. Ten wins was by submission, 7 by KO and 1 decision. His opponent, Derek Brunson, is ranked 5th.

In this article I’d like to look at the following points:

  • The line-up / fight card
  • What the hell is going on with Dana White?

UFC 285 Fight Card

I’m excited to see Cyril Gane go up against Jon Jones as Jones went up in weight to have a chance at the belt. The co-main event is between the undisputed flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who’s on a 9-win streak, against Alexa Grasso.

Furthermore, we have Bo Nickal making his debut in UFC 285 against Jamie Pickett. Nickal is opening the PPV event, which is strange. He is placed “above” ranked fighters (du Plessis and Brunson). Why is that?

According to du Plessis in an interview with the Schmo, he had the following to say:

“Look, the organization is probably thinking: ‘we have an American Khamzat Chimaev here” and he continues, “But to be honest, I think it’s bulls**t. This guy is coming in to make his UFC debut fighting on the main card. I have had four fights and three performance bonuses, and now I get booted to the undercard. But there is no hate, it’s not his fault. He is only here to fight, but the proof is in the pudding, all will be revealed once he is under those bright lights. Let’s see how he performs then.”

Clearly there’s a lot of pressure on Nickal to perform at UFC 285 and to try to outperform du Plessis since he made his promotional debut in October 2020 against Markus Perez.

The Dark Side of Dana White

Knowing what’s been going on lately with Dana White and some of his fighters, it’s hard not to bring this up. The UFC has been getting a lot of bad press in recent years do to misconduct with the latest being of White hitting his wife in public. Please read more on this here.

We’re also seeing Jon Jones back with a title fight. Jones has not had a fight since February 2020 making it 3 years of not fighting. All of a sudden he’s back with a title fight. Let’s look into this some more.

Jon Jones

2012: Jones was in a car accident and arrested for DWI (driving while intoxicated.

2015: Jones was alleged to have run a red light, crashed his car involving two other vehicles and then fled the scene on foot. One of the victims was a pregnant woman. They also found a pipe with marijuana in the rental car (in the name of Jones). He was able to avoid any charges to his criminal record.

2019: A charge of battery was made against Jones for slapping, choking then kissing and touching (non-consensual) a cocktail waitress.

2020: Again the fighter was arrested for DWI after a police officer heard what sounded like a gunshot. Jones was more than twice over the legal limit after given a breathalyzer test.

2021: Jones’ youngest daughter requested help from hotel security due to a domestic incident. This incident occurred the night after Jones was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame for his fight against Alexander Gustafsson. He had allegedly beaten his fiancée and then tried to flee the scene upon arrival of Cops.

Although all the signs were there, Jones’ fiancée dropped all charges against him a couple of months later. Some of the what he had done to his fiancée included:

  • pulling of hair
  • striking
  • being belligerent

While all this was going on and Jones apparently was kicked out of the UFC for his misconduct he was still fighting and earning money. He had fights every year between 2012 (when his misconduct started) up until 2020. It adds up to 12 fights since 2012.

Other Fighters With Misconduct

Jones is not the only fighter who makes the UFC and Dana White look bad. Others include Conor McGregor, Nick Diaz, Mike Perry, Greg Hardy and Thiago Silva who had two counts of attempted murder against him! Finally we have Dana White himself who laid his hands on his own wife in public.

These are only a few, there are more, who was still allowed to fight for the UFC even after the allegations were made against them.

There are NO Consequences for the Wicked

In light of all the fighters misbehaving outside of the octagon, they are still allowed to continue fighting.

The UFC is looking at a bad reputation gaining in popularity. White is not only unable to control his fighters, but himself too. Remember, in the empty words of White:

“There’s one thing that you never bounce back from and that’s putting your hands on a woman. Been that way in the UFC since we started here. You don’t bounce back from putting your hands on a woman.” – Irish Mirror

And yet, he’s allowing some big names to return and continue doing what they’re doing. Why? One can only speculate that money plays a big role. Although he’s not big on paying his fighters, he knows which ones will bring in the big bucks for himself. Apparently this makes it okay.

Perhaps one day the UFC will turn into a cage fight for criminals. You’re not allowed unless you’re a criminal.

Dana White needs a reality check and some big changes need to be made on a moral level rather than a monetary level.
