Creating awareness around the issue of mental health can be tough. Yes, mental health conditions have been on the rise and even more so in the past 3 years. But nothing else has been done to assist the great influx of mental health patients.

How to take care of your mental health

We all have habits, some are good while some are bad for us. Here are 5 habits to unlearn if you want to take better care of your mental health:

Relying on others to make you feel fulfilled

It’s never a good idea to rely on others to make you feel happy or fulfilled. In fact, this will never be a solution to your mental health issues. It may actually make things worse.

Relying on others for your mood means that you’re giving up control over yourself. You’re totally in the hands of others of whom you don’t have control over. And that’s usually how mental health begins.

People no longer feel like they are in control or they feel like they are being controlled. They don’t know what to do and mental health is a great coping mechanism. The result is depression, anxiety and eating disorders.

Eating disorders usually give you some control back over what you’re allowing or not allowing to enter your body. It’s not healthy.

You have to be able to create your own happiness, regain control over who you are and what you want. Your happiness and fulfilment should never be left to the vices of someone else. No one can make you happy except yourself.

You can be happy with someone, but they can’t magically make you happy. They aren’t in control of your mind. Only you are.

Saying yes to every request

Just because someone is asking something of you, doesn’t mean you have to say yes every time. This applies to all aspects: work, personal, social.

If you continue saying yes to requests, you’ll end up burnt out and staring anxiety and depression in the face.

Already struggling with mental health and accepting more and more demands and requests will only worsen your current condition. You don’t have to say yes if you don’t want to.

Not taking or asking for help when you really need it

I’m guilty of this. Most of us think we’re strong enough and we can tackle anything alone. Perhaps we don’t ask for help due to past experiences.

I know this was something I had to relearn. Asking for help in the past only made things worse. You know why? I was asking the wrong people and in the wrong way.

Not asking for help will have the same result. We’re social beings and we recover faster when we have a loved one there next to us with every step of the way.

Anyone who cares for and loves you will not see this as a burden and they definitely will not keep it against you. Ask for help when you need it but remember to ask the right people.

It goes without saying, accept help when someone offers. Not everyone out there will think that you owe them if they helped you. Especially not when it comes to mental health.

Help comes in the form of:

  • Listening
  • Driving you to your next (therapist) appointment
  • Giving a hug or holding your hand when you’re emotional

Avoiding how you really feel

Aren’t most of us guilty of doing this? We try to fool ourselves into thinking “Nah, I’m not depressed, I just didn’t have a good night’s sleep”.

Avoiding how you really feel will only repress those emotions. The emotion will not be dealt with and will come up again and it may get worse the more we try to repress it.

If you’re struggling to face your feelings head-on, try self-reflection. It’s a great way to figure out how you really feel, where the emotion is coming from and how to deal with it in the future. It’s the first step in figuring out how to take care of your mental health.

Being unclear in how you communicate

Learn to communicate clearly. If we can’t openly say how we feel, how should anyone else know what’s going on?

Here are a few things you can do to communicate more clearly:

  • Prepare what you want to say and how to do so ahead of time
  • Be mindful of your nonverbal communication (body language)
  • Deliver your words clearly
  • Communication is a two-way street. Keep it that way

Remember, you are responsible for how you choose to communicate and what message gets across. That means you also have the responsibility to learn how to communicate more effectively and clearly.

There’s a lot of myths or misunderstanding of what mental health is and what it’s not. It’s especially difficult for individuals to know what mental health really is if they haven’t struggled with it before.

It’s not something I wish on anyone, ever. And that’s why creating awareness around mental health and what it’s not is so important. Understanding what it is is how you can achieve and maintain good mental health practices.

Mental health isn’t:

  • A sign of weakness
  • Either always on a high or always on a low. It’s a continuum and always changing.
  • All in your head. It’s not something we think up and then just feel.
  • Something you can snap out of since it’s not all in your head.
  • Something you should ever be ashamed of.

Mental health is:

  • Something that should be taken seriously.
  • Linked to physical health. Anxiety (as an example) manifests physically to let you know what’s going on and how you’re feeling.
  • Worth making time for and to take care of.
  • Important.

How to Take Care of Your Mental Health

Besides yoga, meditation and breathing exercises there are other ways that you can take care of your mental health.

It’s walking away from toxic people in your life. This links with the paragraph on accepting and asking for help when you really need it. If someone is toxic in your life you have to let them go. I know how difficult it is especially if you love or care for this person.

Notice the small (or bigger) moments of joy in your day. Celebrate the small victories. Perhaps you noticed someone helping a homeless person or someone brought you a cuppa. It’s small but meaningful.

Don’t look for approval from others. You only need approval from yourself. If something feels right – that’s your gut giving you the only approval you need.

And finally, accept who you are and be compassionate toward yourself and others. Having compassion doesn’t cost a thing. You don’t know someone else’s story but neither do they know yours. So be kind and be compassionate toward others (and yourself).
