5 Benefits of Yoga

It is well known that yoga has a lot of benefits. Not only is it good for toning and stretching, but also for mental health. This includes anxiety and depression. Yoga boasts with its breathing techniques and increased mobility. Let’s look into some of these in more detail.

How My Journey Started

My journey with yoga started back in 2014 when I was going through a rough time. I tried yoga and did about 15 minutes a day. At first I noticed it helped me a lot with the back problems I have. Through strengthening and stretching my back muscles I was relieved of a lot of the pain I had.

I then set a goal of doing my first 5k run. Something I had never done before. I was not a runner and I hated running. But I had to set a goal and get my mind off the darkness that I was surrounded with. Needless to say the 5K then turned into a 10K. Yoga helped me tremendously with breathing through each step and kept my mind strong.

Here’s What I’ve Learnt

  1. Yoga helped me focus. If I wasn’t focused I would wobble around and fall over. That’s okay. We all fall over sometimes (in life). We just get up again and try and regain that focus.
  2. I learnt how to breathe. Breathing is extremely important. How many times do we not catch ourselves taking shallow breaths when we’re stressed out? Take a deep breath and with each exhale just let your shoulders fall down. It will lower your heart rate and relax your central nervous system.
  3. Yoga helps with relaxation. This goes hand-in-hand with breathing. You don’t have to be able to do crazy handstands or scorpion poses to say that you practice yoga. Sometimes all you need is just to relax and let Yoga guide you. I do yoga most days, especially when I’m stressed out and need to re-canter myself.
  4. It decreases anxiety. Anxiety has picked up since COVID. We’re anxious to be around others. We’re anxious to go out, to have friends over and even to buy groceries. I know I’ve become more anxious. Practicing yoga most days of the week has helped me with my anxiety and feeling tense all the time. I get to loosen up a bit and focus on what’s important.
  5. Last but not least, it gives mental clarity. I’ve noticed this more so during exam times. After 15 – 30 minutes of yoga I would hit the books and everything would just make more sense. I don’t feel frazzled or like nothing is making sense. It would feel like everything is falling into place as it should. My mind is no longer clouded and fuzzy.

Yoga Requirements

No, you don’t really need anything to start practicing yoga. You just need yourself. But in all honesty, a good place to start would be a yoga mat. You can buy one online at Amazon. They’re relatively inexpensive. I would suggest starting out with a thicker mat just until you get used to it. Something that is no-slip would also be a good idea if you’re practicing on tiles.

The only other prop I make use of is blocks. I have a set of cork blocks (also available on Amazon) which works extremely well. Blocks are not only for beginners, but for intermediates as well. Anyone can benefit from using blocks.

Where to Start with Yoga

I would suggest starting out with Yoga with Kassandra. You can follow her on YouTube and practice with her. Her practice ranges from beginner to intermediate. She’s gentle and will talk you through each pose.

My other favorite is Breathe and Flow. When I’m up for a challenge I do one of their practices. Their style is different, which I love, and they have such soothing voices. They will also teach you breathing techniques to help with your flow.
